The Burger King creeps me out
This topic on ORblogs prompted this post. What the hell is up with that creepy Burger King mask? All I know is, if I see that thing anywhere near my house, burger or no burger, I'm going for a gun.

John,
The updated mask looks fantastic, particularly the hair and eyes. I am curious as to why you've got the crown on the mask... wouldn't people want to wear the mask over their face and then wear a standard BK crown (free at any restaurant) on top, instead of having the crown be part of the mask? Since you've got the mold, I trust you've got this sorted out.
Also, I can confirm that Brian or whoever hasn't sent me jack, so don't listen to him. Thanks also for the amazon.com advice... spot on as far as being the best overall king costume I've seen online.

Wow it looks like Burger King finally did make some- I wonder what corporate plans on doing with them... They do kinda look more like kid-sized ones and aren't oversized (actually look under-sized) which is the main thing that makes the king creepy looking. The actual helium tank topper that BK copied the mask from is up on eBay as well- and skyrocketing in price. The seller says you can wear it as a mask but have you seen a helium tank? I don't know who has a head that small.
My materials should arrive tommorrow and I'm going to take advantage of the 3 day weekend to make as many masks as possible! I'm fairly confident it will turn out better than those cheapy small ones but only time will tell... I can tell you my masks will be twice the size of that small one and will wrap around the side a little so your face won't show as much. I won't be getting in bed with a dude to take the picture though... eek!

John- agreed in full that the "oversize" nature of the mask in the tv commercials is a key part of its creepiness, and the fact that it wraps around on the side is key as well. If you're looking for help marketing these things, I'm happy to assist... demand certainly seems to be quite high.

question, how do you plan on coloring in each mask? seems like a big task to do to each individually.
any update on what the current demand is, how many you think you can do each day, etc... basically curious if halloween is too close to expect one myself. you have made my halloween.

the more I think about it, the more I think you are better off selling the masks in both painted and unpainted models... this will allow you to get more product out there, and if those of us that want them bad enough get them early enough, we can buy paints and do the jobs ourselves. far be it for me to tell you how to run your already awesome business, but this seems like a good idea to me

I have no idea how many I'll be able to make. I hope to get started tommorrow and the second finished mask (first is mine!) will go on eBay as a no reserve auction. The female mold is already starting to cure and so far looks like it will peel off easily from the male mold.
Each mask will be painted by a Burger King elf and then sprinkled with fairy dust ;)
By the way, I've only been saving people who have directly emailed me to my email list. I'll also post on here when the auction goes up, but those who just gave me their email on this thread will not be added to my update list... My eBay name is jhbmw007 and I have a feedback score of 62 with 100% positive feedback. Any search of "BK mask" or "burger king mask/costume" on eBay should find my auction when it begins.

Question, so you made the bust, then an inverse mold, which you'll fill with the liquid plastic which will harden and presumably lift right out, voila mask. Is that correct, and if so, how many inverse molds did you create? Just curious, not demanding, but I figured if you made two or three of them you could really increase your output, right? Thanks so much for doing this.
Comment by Peter at 2005-10-07 04:33:49
John writes:
Well I only had enough to make one inverse mold. The working time for the liquid plastic is only like 60 seconds and then it starts to harden and can be pulled out in 5-10 minutes. It's also a 2 person job (hence the need for the BK elves) so having extra inverse molds wouldn't help. It's really neat stuff- I made a small test piece from a candy mold and it cured so strong that I can't even break it in half.

First mask was a dud- I made it too thin and it cracked. The second mask came out better, but still a bit thin on the edges. Looks like I'm going to have to use 4 cups of liquid plastic per mask- which means my current supply will only make about 6-7 masks. Good news is I found a place 20 minutes from me that sells the stuff. I'm going to go there today and get a stockpile of it.
I don't think I can take off from work but I do have a 3 day weekend and it looks like it's going to rain anyways- my apartment is going to turn into a mask factory!

I'm 6'4" and 235 lbs and the King Francious costume just fits me. However my fiancee did make some alterations to it to make it look more like the BK king. The black "vest" part isn't a full shirt and looked kinda funny because my stomach was hanging out lol. I looked like the trailer park Burger King.

She said she'd do them for around $25-$35 per mask. It's guaranteed business for her so obviously the better she does the better they'll sell. Hope to have some pics up tommorrow.

Thanks for the quick response John. $25-$35 is a little higher than I wanted to go, but if she does a really good job, then it might be worth it. Maybe she'd be willing to do the first few for cheaper to prove to future buyers that she is obviously worth it.
I look forward to the pictures.

John,I have been following this thread from the beginning and I think your mask is the bomb.I have been trying to get one of the real ones since I first saw the commercial.I even went so far as to call the president of burger king(John W. Chidsey)on his private line, but I called after hours and left a message that I wanted to wear the burger king outfit to the American Idol tryouts and I went into detail about it and then I was going to leave my phone number and then it happened,it ran out of tape.Well needless to say I was so embarrased that I left such a long message and did not get to leave my number,I immediatly called back but it said that the voice mail was full,so I just left it alone but wondered what he thought about that?I know that must have freaked him out.
Well, anyway John I wanted one of these mask, not for Halloween, but for everyday use just for fun.So if you make more and they are pretty reasonable(unpainted) then email me at : the_twisted_nipple@yahoo.com
I personally think you done a great job with the largeness of the head(that is what makes it unique)I doubt BK will ever come out with one as big as yours and if it is small like the one on bk.com then it losses its freakishness,so kudos to you and let me know ,even if it is after Halloween.

I believe the bkmasks.com shortage rumor to be true. Something just seems weird about that whole situation. They went from "no way we're having masks for this halloween" to all of a sudden a mask and such a low price that they would have A LOT of orders. They clearly didn't have them made yet, otherwise they wouldn't have said "ready before Halloween". They would have just shipped it out a few days after your order.
Something is fishy here, and I'm sure glad I bought one of John's masks. they are bigger, better, and a much stronger guarantee.
With that being said, I also purchased a bkmasks.com mask within hours of when they were first posted, so I have a good chance of getting it earlier than people just finding this now. Once I have John's mask and can confirm it's the bomb, I will sell my bkmasks.com mask, probably at cost. I can overnight it or whatever, if anyone is interested.

I can't charge below $7.50 total for the medallions- eBay fees, paypal fees, cost of padded envelopes, and postage all add up. If $7.50 is too steep you can buy some Sculpy Clay and make one yourself. a) I got no hate mail for my first ebay posting telling people to go to bkmasks.com. I did get about six people emailing me to thank me, a few of them I turned on to this site and John's mask.
b) that medallion price is very fair. If you're going to spend $50 on a costume, that last $7.50 to put the icing on the cake is well worth it. That's less than two meatnormous sandwiches (I got one today... awesome sandwich)
c) I LOVE the idea of rolling up to a BK in costume... I may do a few drive throughs and a couple restaurants. This is the most I've ever spent on a costume too, so I'm gonna make it worth my while.
d) I got my King Francois The First costume today from amazon.com. I am 6'2", 180lbs, so I will put it on and take a few pictures to give people my size an idea of what it looks like. It's pretty high quality though, not cheap lycra like some store costumes.
